Ребята перед отъездом разослали всем, кто помогал им в тяжелые дни, нашей замечательной ground team вот такое трогательное благодарственное письмо:
Dear ground team
It is nothing less than a pleasure to be able to write you this email, on the eve of our departure from Russia (or for those of us who are Russian, the eve of the end of the legal ordeal).
It is not an exaggeration to say we would not be here – at least not in the reasonable state we’re in – if it were not for you.
When we arrived in Murmansk before being driven through the night and getting to the law courts, we saw some of you. What a sight. We knew we had friends in town, we knew somebody somewhere was caring for our welfare. In those first few days of bewilderment as we were dragged in and out of court, seeing those smiling welcoming caring faces was almost as important as realizing we had lawyers.
Following the shock of incarceration in a truly horrible prison, the drip feed of food, cigarettes, clothing, letters and love was something that none of us could have survived without. There were more than a few truly dark moments for all 30 of us and nothing lifted our spirits more than the knowledge of your support day in day out of getting everything you possibly could through to us. Some of what arrived in the duty of care packages seemed to help more in making us laugh that feeding our bellies. This ranged from a scrabble game printed out and stuck together with unequal squares to a delivery of only cigarettes and matches to the non-smokers.
What was amazing is that you all just got better and better at forcing the prison system into accepting more and more until our cell mates were truly happy in having an Arctic 30 prisoner sharing their cell. It should not be underestimated how beneficial this was. One of the A30 said the minutes went slow but the weeks went fast and after arriving in St Petersburg the dedication of the CoD and support team seemed if anything to have increased. Those moments of stumbling out onto the streets and being led and protected to a waiting car through a state of joy, shock and happiness will remain with us for a very very long time.
We thank all of you with every ounce of gratitude, and we respect the herculean task of keeping the Arctic 30 in as positive and healthy state as humanly possible, including while separated by steel bars and razor wire.
Without you we would have wilted and suffered more than any of us wish to contemplate. And the care and love you showed us at the Peterville and then the Park Inn has been over-whelming and humbling. Many of you gave up time with your families to spend time with us, even Christmas. We hope we were worth it.
